The Giant Magellan Telescope will be located at Cerro Las Campanas at Las Campanas Observatory in the Atacama Desert of Chile, about two hours drive from the coastal town of La Serena. The images here show the progress of construction since the site was levelled in 2012.
The 8.4 meter GMT mirrors are produced at the Richard F. Caris Mirror Lab at the University of Arizona.

The Giant Magellan Telescope Groundbreaking Ceremony took place on November 11, 2015 at Las Campanas Observatory in Chile. Distinguished guests participating in the ceremony were the President of Chile Michelle Bachelet, the US Ambassador to Chile Michael Hammer, the President of the University of Chile Ennio Vivaldi, and Chair of the GMTO Board Taft Armandroff.
