Background:
This exciting job opportunity is with the GMTO (Giant Magellan Telescope Organization) located in Pasadena, California. The GMT is being developed by a group of leading university and research centers from across the globe. The GMTO Corporation has been formed to design, construct and operate the GMT Observatory which will be located in the Andean mountains at Las Campanas Peak in Chile. The GMT is the next generation astronomical observatory with the capability to have 10 times the resolution of the Hubble Space Telescope. The project is entering the formal construction phase with scientific operations expected to begin in 2021-2022.

The successful candidate will be an employee of the GMTO Corporation and must be able to meet pre-employment requirements including any background and reference checks and the successful candidate must be a US citizen or eligible to work in the United States and at least 18 years of age. Job Summary:
GMTO is seeking to hire a Site Safety Officer, whose main responsibilities will be to facilitate compliance with Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) regulations and guidelines ensuring that all GMT personnel consider personnel and equipment safety in every task at the telescope site (Cerro Las Campanas, Chile).
The ideal candidate will largely focus on prevention by executing the GMT EHS Program and will ensure the reliable and safe construction and operation of the GMT Observatory.
The Site Safety Officer will report directly to the GMT Head of Environmental, Health and Safety ensuring all activities at the telescope observatory and facilities site comply with appropriate Chilean regulations, GMTO vendors and subcontractors have an established and transparent safety program as part of their contractual obligations to GMTO and will support the development of the EHS Program. The successful candidate will also be detail-oriented, ready to act in emergencies and will support creating a EHS culture on the site including interactions with other Observatories in the area.
The selected individual will have to work at the telescope site 3-4 days of the week and work from the GMT office in La Serena the rest of the time.

Job Duties:
• Ensure all activities at the telescope and facilities site comply with Chilean regulations, and that GMTO vendors and subcontractors have an established and transparent safety program as part of their contractual obligations to GMTO.
• Plan and participate in meetings to identify any health and safety concerns inherent in the operations daily work plan.
• Report and track metrics, and other data, to assess performance of the EHS Program (on a regular basis)
• Organize and conduct safety training for all GMTO staff including specialized training as appropriate for selected personnel
• Conduct risk assessment and enforce preventative measures
• Inspect premises and the work of personnel to identify issues or non-conformity (e.g. not using protective equipment)
• Oversee installations, maintenance, disposal of substances etc.
• Stop any unsafe acts or processes that seem dangerous or unhealthy
• Lead safety committees for recording and investigating incidents to determine causes and implement countermeasures for avoiding incident recurrence
• Prepare reports on occurrences and provide statistical information to local upper management

Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
• Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Safety Engineering, Occupational Safety or related discipline
• Minimum of 3 years of professional experience with safety practices at large industrial construction sites
• Experience with fire and earthquake safety management, planning and training
• Solid understanding of Safety principles, concepts, theory, regulations, and practice
• Previous experience working in an engineering environment and interfacing with teams of scientists, engineers, and technicians
• Prior experience formulating, documenting and maintaining safety standards and on-going safety objectives
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to read, analyze and interpret, technical procedures and standards
• Ability to speak and write in English (Business level)
• Expertise with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Power Point)
• Previous experience developing training programs on safety topics
• Ability to work at an altitude of 8000 feet for extended periods

Desirable Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
• Minimum of 3 years of professional experience with safety practices at large industrial construction sites
• Ability to climb structures and inspection of hardware on large construction projects
• Ability to speak and read in Spanish
