Preparations are continuing for casting the third mirror segment, planned to take place in August 2013. About 80% of the hexagonal mold cores have been installed. Molten glass will flow around these hexagonal structures, resulting in a mirror that it much lighter than one made of solid glass. The mirror will have hundreds of honeycomb-shaped voids that make it easier to control its temperature and shape, resulting in sharper images. (Photo credit: Ray Bertram, U of Arizona)
