"The GMT Site Transformed" - over the first half of 2012, engineers cleared the summit of Las Campanas Peak to prepare the ground for construction of the GMT. The site testing tower, seen to the left in the image from 2009, and the outcroppings and other features in the landscape have been removed or leveled to produce a flat platform for the telescope and support buildings. Nearly 4 million cubic feet of rock were redistributed while preparing the site. The perspective on the "before" image and the current view of the site is not exact, as the photographer was at 9 meters lower elevation than he was before the work started!
